The qualitative overlay
Valuation alone is incomplete. Management incentives, ownership structure, related-party risk, and the quality of growth can materially change the investment case.
A cheap micro-cap with a misaligned owner is not a bargain. Related-party loans, option grants that reset, and “growth” that is only FX or a one-time subsidy show up after the screen, not inside it.
HIT Capital’s qualitative overlay asks a short list of unromantic questions:
- Who actually controls capital allocation, and how are they paid?
- Is reported growth reconcilable to cash and to unit trends?
- What would have to be true for this to be a value trap?
- Can we live with the liquidity if we are wrong for a year?
Those questions do not replace valuation. They decide whether a name deserves a full file. The software’s job is to get more names to that door. The manager’s job is to walk through it slowly.
